Async, parallel, concurrent, and multithreaded are four distinct concepts. They overlap, they collaborate, but they are not interchangeable. The Restaurant Analogy (The Only One You’ll Ever Need)

Asynchronous: “Don’t Block, Come Back Later”

Async is about non-blocking execution. When your code hits an operation that takes time (reading a file, calling an API, querying a database), instead of sitting there frozen, it says “let me know when you’re done” and goes to do other useful work.

In C#, the async/await keywords are the mechanism. But here’s the thing most people get wrong:

async/await does NOT create new threads.

Read that again. Let it sink in. async/await is fundamentally about releasing the current thread during a wait, not about spinning up new threads. The thread goes back to the thread pool and handles other requests. When the awaited operation completes, a thread picks up where you left off.

Different thread IDs! The thread that started the method is NOT necessarily the one that finishes it. During the await, Thread 1 went back to the pool to serve other requests. When the HTTP response came back, Thread 7 (or any available thread) picked up the continuation.

This is why async is a game-changer for web servers. A synchronous ASP.NET server with 100 threads can handle 100 concurrent requests. An async server with 100 threads can handle thousands, because threads are released during I/O waits instead of sitting idle.

Async is designed for I/O-bound operations, things where you’re waiting on something external:

If your code is crunching numbers, hashing passwords, or processing images, there’s no I/O to wait on. The CPU is busy the entire time. Making a CPU-bound method async doesn’t make it faster. It just adds overhead.

Parallel: “Do Multiple Things Simultaneously”

Parallelism means multiple operations are literally executing at the same instant on different CPU cores. This is about raw throughput for CPU-bound work.

C# gives you two main tools for parallelism:
